The Right Carcass for Rubber Conveyor Belts: Fabric, Steel Cord and Aramid Compared

The carcass determines the strength, elongation and service performance of conveyor belts. Compare fabric conveyor belt, steel cord and aramid carcass to pick the best option for your bulk material handling project.

Many buyers focus only on rubber cover wear resistance when ordering conveyor belts, while ignoring the most critical part — the carcass. The carcass is the load-bearing core of the belt, deciding tensile strength, stretch rate, heat tolerance and minimum pulley diameter. Wrong carcass selection leads to belt elongation, slippage, delamination and unexpected shutdowns.

We compare the four mainstream carcass types for heavy-duty rubber conveyor belts:

1. NN (Nylon) Carcass Nylon fabric features excellent impact resistance and good flexibility. It works well for light & medium-load, room-temperature conveying. Limitation: Large thermal shrinkage under continuous high temperature. Not suitable for hot material delivery. It is gradually replaced by EP belts in most mineral and cement hot working conditions.

2. EP (Polyester-Nylon) Carcass EP is the most widely used general-purpose carcass. The polyester warp brings low elongation, and nylon weft provides good tear and impact resistance. EP supports heat-resistant, flame-retardant, non-sticking and oil-resistant compound covers. It is the preferred choice for cement, coking, power plant and metallurgy medium-distance conveying. It balances performance and cost.

3. Steel Cord Carcass Steel cord belts offer ultra-high tensile strength and nearly zero elongation. They are designed for long-distance, high-capacity, heavy-load main conveying lines in mines and ports. Weakness: Steel wires rust easily in salt-fog or humid corrosive environments. It also requires larger pulley diameters and adds heavy dead load to the whole conveyor system.

4. Aramid (DPP) Carcass As a high-performance alternative to steel cord, aramid carcass is lightweight, non-corrosive and with ultra-low elongation. It fits smaller pulleys and reduces the load of drive equipment. It is ideal for coastal ports, chemical plants and long-distance conveyors where rust is a major concern. The downside is higher upfront purchase cost, so it is recommended for high-value, long-lifecycle projects.

For general medium-temperature, medium-duty lines, EP is the cost-effective standard. For super-long heavy trunk lines, steel cord remains the mainstream. Aramid is the premium solution for corrosion-sensitive sites.
